Preston's newest piano-punk band hail from the Stars

Russ on the funky walking bassUnless you have been staring into space for the past two months, you cannot have failed to notice the rise of Preston’s newborn Piano-punk band ‘Star 27’. In fact, if you have been staring into space, you may find the bands’ strange approach to life and music a little more comprehensible than the rest of us.

Legend has it that an inexplicable, otherworldly force, known only as ‘Star 27’ decided to treat planet earth to its musical prowess and, in doing so, has brought together a group of four disciples through which it can channel its music towards the general public.

Personable

Out of character, and away from the grasp of Star 27, the 4-piece are personable yet quite reserved, and the bassist can be recognised as none other than Russ ‘Hypervalue’ Carlton.

However, when seeing that they are planning in future to set up their equipment in a line – with the drums stage left, and seeing them successfully pull off plans for an acoustic jam on a busy roundabout, it becomes clear that, as a band, Star 27 are a different prospect altogether.

Additions

Listen Up finds that almost all information about the band and their music appears to be directed through the lead singer Frank Beaver, and every sentence usually begins with ‘Star 27 has.. ’or ‘Star 27 believes..’, making it extremely difficult to extract any kind of sense or logic whatsoever:

Rachel McDonald - Star 27 drummer“Star 27 has brought us together as a means of channelling its music towards earth. It merely uses humans or pens or computers as a medium through
which it can get its songs heard.” Explains Frank, also hinting towards additions to the band in the near future:

“We are just the disciples, Star 27 has plans for more disciples but I may not comment on their roles, other
than to say there will be more vocals and more instruments.”

High-quality

Star 27 began gigging at a Riot On Church St night at The 12 Bar on May 27, kicking off a mammoth stint of 6 gigs in less than a month in order to promote their name and sound.

“The opening night was good,” says Russ “We were playing with Capulet and The Superkings and we’ve been getting more and more people at every gig.”

“Its something new,” adds Frank, “ there are no recordings as yet so it pays to gig a lot, its peoples’ only chance to hear the songs and people are already singing along to some of them. People comment a lot on the energy in the performance, even if the songs are high-quality, it helps to capture the crowd’s interest”

Recording equipment everywhere as Star 27 start their new EPThe band are currently recording a new four-track EP and are penned to play The Mill on July 24 before taking their industry elsewhere for the foreseeable future:

Frank: “After the 24th there will be nothing in Preston for a while, depending on disciples and the CD we are due to travel to London, Liverpool and Manchester for some gigs – Star 27 has people ready in each place.”

The last Star 27 gig saw the 12 Bar sell out before 9:00pm, so all the signs from above say it may well be worth catching them at The Mill before they jet off around the UK in search of further adventures.
