Underdogs - Some Things Change (4 track demo)

Ian BaileyWithin seconds of pressing playing on opening track Tuesday Night, it is clear what Underdogs are all about. The influence of that driving, anthemic, drum driven indie-rock sound of the 90s has never been more evident than here.

Beginning in the vein of Oasis' Hung In A Bad Place, it is easy to pass judgement and decide its all been done before - and you would be right, it has. But that does not make this demo any less valid or reputable.

The Boy In The Window continues in the same light with Kelly Jones lyrics and a catchy guitar hook as Underdogs unashamedly rehash solo after riff after solo in the same scale.

If you want to indulge in the oasis comparisons then Be Here Now is the chosen era and you'd do well looking up the Stone Roses as well.

A New Beginning has a dark, dreamy feel to it, set over a marching drumbeat before collapsing into an indulgent multi-track outro of battling swamp guitars.

At times Underdogs wear their influences far too proudly on their sleeves, barely ever will you be surprised at the route a song takes, and the vocals need to be projected more to lift the songs the extra step they need to turn them into contenders.

The disc finishes on a live version of Rainy Days, which proves that Underdogs are perfectly capable of writing competent pop songs and hopefully, with time, will develop a little further away from their original influences.
